Fact check: Singer Mukesh’s song not sung by PM Narendra Modi, voice is AI generated

Widely shared post suggesting that Prime Minister Narendra Modi sang, ‘Kisi ki muskurahaton se’ is fake. The audio is created using artificial intelligence. Viral claim is fake.

A famous Bollywood song featuring Raj Kapoor from the movie Anari, sung by noted singer Mukesh, ‘Kisi ki muskurahaton se’, is being widely shared on the social media platforms in the voice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi. It is being claimed that the users that the song is now sung by the PM. During the investigation we found the claim to be false. The voice of Prime Minister Narendra Modi used in the five minute song is AI generated.

Claim:

Facebook user Raj Kumar Gupta Lalganj shared the song on his profile.

We found that several other users too were sharing the song with the same claim.

Investigation:

We started our investigation by checking the claim using Google keyword search. We could not find any credible media organisation that carried the news report about the same.

Also, when listened to the song carefully there were a few glitches and the song had a monotonous nature, which suggested that this could be AI generated.

We downloaded the video from Facebook and converted it to mp3 format.

We then uploaded this audio to ‘Optic AI or Not’ AI detector.

The results suggested that the audio could be AI generated.

We also uploaded the audio to another AI detector, itisaar.ai, developed by a team at IIT Jodhpur.

The analysis by the tool suggested that the audio is a deepfake audio.
