Fact check: Video from Afghanistan shared as fight on live TV between BJP and INC members

A fight between panel members during a live TV debate in Afghanistan that happened seven years ago, is now being shared with misleading claims of the fight being between BJP and INC members during a TV debate in Manipur. Viral claims are false.

Lighthouse Journalism found a video being shared on the social media platforms, where guests in a panel during a live debate on TV were seen fighting with each other. It was claimed in the video that the guests fighting were members of BJP and INC in Manipur. During the investigation it was found that the video clipping being shared is not from India, but from Afghanistan.

Claim:

X user Essie Naga shared the video on her profile.

Investigation:

We started our investigation by uploading the video in the InVid tool. Through this we got several keyframes of the same, and then we ran a reverse image search on the keyframes one after another.

We found a news report on the website of thenews.com.pk, titled: Watch: Participants get into fight live on Afghanistan TV

The report was uploaded on 19 February, 2019.

We also found the video uploaded on a YouTube channel seven years ago. The video was titled: Physical fight in live political debate on Afghan TV

We also found a video uploaded on redd.tube, where the credit was given to 1tv Kabul

We then searched for the video on YouTube channel of 1TV Kabul. We found a 26 minute long video uploaded on their YouTube channel seven years ago.

During the end of the video two members from are panel are seen engaging in a heated discussion followed by a physical fight.

The controversial discussion was about Hekmatyar’s joining the Afghan government’s peace process, as mentioned in the title of the YouTube video.

Afghanistan government in 2016 signed a draft peace accord with notorious exiled warlord Gulbuddin Kekmatyar, paving the way for his return after years of fighting the central authorities.

The video was also being shared as that of India in 2019.
