Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely shared on social media platforms. The footage shows several houses being swept away by powerful floodwaters. The video has been shared repeatedly with the claim that it is from Jammu.

During the investigation, we discovered that the video originated from Norway, not India.

Claim:

X user Dr Kamlesh Sharma shared the video with a misleading claim.

Other users are also sharing the video with a similar claim.

Investigation:

We initiated the investigation by conducting a reverse image search on the keyframes extracted from the video.

The visual match section suggested that the video showed a Norwegian landslide.

We found the visuals in a video uploaded on 1 May on Facebook.

The caption said: #Norway Impressive landslide of a portion of land with houses in Norway.

We also found the video uploaded on X (formerly Twitter).

We then ran a keyword search on the Google search engine and found that the incident occurred in 2020.

We found the video posted by The Telegraph on YouTube over five years ago.

A similar video was uploaded by NBC News.

The description said: Eight houses slid into the sea as a landslide tore away over 800 yards of northern Norway’s coastline.

Conclusion: Old video from Norway of houses being swept away due to a landslide is now being shared as recent from the Jammu floods. The viral claim is misleading.
