Fact check: Viral video of RSS workers dancing from 2015 shared as that from 1942

Video from 2015 of RSS workers, when they danced before a meeting in Nagpur, falsely shared as old from 1942. The viral claim is false.

Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely shared on social media platforms. The video was a black and white footage, claimed to be from 1942. The user also claimed that this was footage from BBC archives. In the video RSS workers, (who can be identified through their uniform), were seen dancing and celebrating.

During the investigation, we found the video to be from 2015. The video is now being shared as from the 1940s with false claims.

Claim:

X user Davinder Pal Singh shared the video on his profile.

Other users are also sharing the same video with similar claims.

Investigation:

We started the investigations by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video. This did not lead us anywhere.

Then we ran a Google keyword search.  We searched for, ‘RSS workers dancing.

This led us to a video uploaded on YouTube channel of Aaj Tak over 9 years ago. The video was titled, ‘RSS workers seen dancing before meeting in Nagpur’.

The video was exactly similar but coloured.

We also found the video on the YouTube channel of Marathi news channel, Zee 24 Taas.

We did not find the video in the BBC archives online.

Conclusion: Video from 2015 of RSS workers, when they danced before a meeting in Nagpur, falsely shared as old from 1942. The viral claim is false.
