Fact check: Old video from Vietnam goes viral as recent from the waterlogged streets of New Delhi

Old video from Vietnam of sparks flying as a live wire falls on a waterlogged street, widely shared as a recent incident from New Delhi. The viral claim is misleading.

Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely shared on social media platforms, where a live wire was seen catching fire on the waterlogged streets it was claimed that the video was from New Delhi, during the recent rains.

During the investigation, we found that the video is not from New Delhi but from Vietnam and is old.

Claim:

X user Sonu Yadav shared the viral video on his platform with a misleading claim.

Other users also shared the same video with a misleading claim.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by using a simple reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.

We found this video on X handle sustainme.in

The video was posted in October 2024. The caption stated: This is what happened when lightning struck floodwaters in Vietnam today #Vietnam

We also found the screenshot of the video uploaded along with a news article on a Vietnamese website, vov.gov.vn.

The article uploaded on 18th October 2024, was titled: Clip: Terrifying moment broken electric wire falls onto flooded road, sparks flying everywhere

We also found the video uploaded on a Vietnamese YouTube channel.

The title said (translation): Horrifying ELECTRIC WIRE FALLS ONTO THE STREET AND SHOOTS SPARKS next to passersby | 3 Minute News

Conclusion: Old video from Vietnam of sparks flying as a live wire falls on a waterlogged street, widely shared as a recent incident from New Delhi. The viral claim is misleading.
