A video featuring a couple assaulting two women is being widely shared online with claims that the incident occurred in Kolkata, West Bengal after the BJP won the elections. Social media users claimed the video showed an attack on Muslims by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) supporters after the party’s victory in the state assembly elections.
During the investigation Lighthouse Journalism found that the video shows an old incident from Maharashtra’s Nashik, where a woman and her daughter were assaulted over a financial dispute. The viral claim is misleading.

Investigation:
We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the viral video.
We found a video posted on, Nashik Star News a month ago.
The victim said in the video, that the man promised a job in return of the money. However when the woman started questioning him and asked for her money back, the man brought two more women along and thrashed the mother-daughter duo on the street. The incident happened in the Jail Road area in Nashik in Maharashtra.
We found another similar video posted on Nashik News, a month ago.
Conclusion: Old video from Nashik of a financial dispute is being shared as recent after BJP won West Bengal assembly elections. The viral claim is misleading.
