Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely shared on social media platforms. In the video, people were seen vandalising a BJP vehicle. It was claimed that this was a result of the ‘vote chor, gaddi chhor’ campaign by Congress. The audio, too, had these chants.

During the investigation, we found that while the campaign is recent, the video is from 2024.

Claim:

X user Suraj G Naik shared the video on his profile with a misleading claim.

Other users are also sharing the same video with similar claim.

Investigation:

We started the investigation with a reverse image search by excluding the text on the picture.

We found this video in a post on X, on May 5, 2024.

The post claimed that the video was from Haryana. However, these video did not have the audio of ‘vote chor, gaddi chhor’.

In this video people were seen vandalising the vehicle with BJP branding.

We also found the video uploaded on YouTube channel Digita Bhoomi.

The description said: सोनीपत के महमूदपुर में BJP प्रत्याशी मोहन लाल बडोली का प्रचार कर रहे पिकअप के लोगों ने फाड़े पोस्टर

Translation: In Mahmoodpur, Sonipat, people in a pickup van tore posters campaigning for BJP candidate Mohan Lal Badoli.

Sonipat is a city in Haryana. This confirms that the video is from Haryana and the audio is edited and attached to an old video.

Conclusion: A video from 2024, from Sonipat in Haryana, is being shared with an overlaid different audio. The viral claim is misleading.
