Fact check: Viral video of Rahul Gandhi saying Narendra Modi will be PM is edited

Lighthouse Journalism found a video of Congress leader Rahul Gandhi being widely shared on social media platforms. In this ‘video’, Rahul Gandhi was seen accepting that the current Prime Minister Narendra Modi will remain the next PM after the results are announced on 4th June. During the investigation we found the viral video to be edited. Instead he was seen saying that Narendra Modi will not be the Prime Minister of India.

Claim:

X user @Vijay_K_Jain shared the video on his profile.

Investigation:

We started our investigation by uploading the video in the InVid tool and running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained through the same.

Through one such reverse image search we found a video on YouTube.

In the video instead Rahul Gandhi was seen saying that ‘Narendra Modi will not remain PM of India on 4th June, 2024’.

We then ran a Google search on the above statement to check the video and news reports.

We found a news report on the website of The Hindu, titled: Modi will not return as PM after 2024 polls, says Rahul Gandhi

Other media houses too carried the news report.

We also found a video posted by Congress official X handle where they called out the edited video.

This video was also retweeted by Rahul Gandhi.

We found out through Google search that the video was from Rahul Gandhi’s public address in Kanpur, Uttar Pradesh.

At around 43 mins into the video Rahul Gandhi starts his speech and at 46 mins he says that ‘on 4th June, 2024, Narendra Modi will not be Prime Minister of the country. He cannot become the Prime Minister of India’.

Conclusion: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi did not say that Narendra Modi will become the Prime Minister on June 4, 2024. Viral video is edited. Viral claims are false.
