Fact check: Old video of people burning N Chandrababu Naidu’s portrait resurfaces as he extends support to BJP

Old video of angry TDP workers burning a picture of N Chandrababu Naidu is now being shared as that from a recent incident, claiming that people are angry after TDP extended support to BJP. Viral claims are misleading.

Lighthouse Journalism came across a video on social media platforms where people were seen burning a portrait of Telugu Desam Party’s N Chandrababu Naidu. It was claimed along with the video that people protested after TDP extended support to BJP to form the government. During investigation we found that the video was not recent. It’s a March video that has resurfaced.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by downloading the video and extracting keyframes from the same. We then ran a reverse image search on keyframes one by one.

We found a news report uploaded on newsmeter on 29th March, 2024.

The news report mentioned that the Telugu Desam Party announced candidates for the General Elections in March, 2024. TDP’s Prashant Chaudhary group which was hoping for a ticket for many years was unhappy with the decision and his faction expressed their anger.

We found a news report on The New Indian Express too.

The report mentioned: The announcement of the fourth and final list of candidates for the Assembly and Lok Sabha seats has sparked dissent within the TDP. Cheepurupalli TDP incharge Kimidi Nagarjuna resigned from the party, resenting the allotment of the Assembly seat to his paternal uncle K Kala Venkata Rao. TDP cadre damaged furniture and burnt the campaign material at the TDP offices in Anantapur and Guntakal Assembly constituencies denouncing the candidate selection.

We also found the video uploaded on Facebook.

The video was uploaded on 29th March, 2024. The caption said, ‘Fires in Guntakal TDP #EndOfTDP’.

We also found, the visuals uploaded in the form of YouTube shorts by ABP Live.

We also found a video on YouTube channel Samayam Telugu, which was the same as the viral video.
