Fact check: Old video from Pakistan circulates as recent, from an Indian political rally

Old video from Pakistan, where former Pak PM Yusuf Raza Gilani apparently groped the then information minister Sherry Rehman is now being widely shared in India, claiming it to be recent and from a political rally in India. Viral claims are false.

Lighthouse Journalism found a video being shared on the social media platforms showing indecent behaviour at a political rally claimed to be that from BJP. Some users are also claiming that the lady seen in the video is actor turned politician Kangana Ranaut. During the investigation we found the video is old and from a rally in Pakistan.

X user Nidhi Sharma shared the viral video on her profile.

Investigation:

We started our investigation by uploading the video in the InVid tool and obtaining the keyframes. We ran a reverse image search on all the keyframes one by one.

We found a video uploaded on the YouTube channel of farhanrmc1. The video was uploaded 13 years ago and had one million views. Which suggested that the video was not recent.

One comment on the video said that the person in the video is Pakistan’s former PM.

We found the video on the website of dailymotion.

The caption mentioned ‘PM Ghelani and Sherry Rehman Scandal’.

We also found the video on a website that mentioned that the video is old.

A YouTube video mentioned in the description: Yousaf Raza Gillani touching Sherry Rehman in a political rally.

We also found a few news reports about the incident.

An article on theguardian.com too mentioned about the incident.
