Fact check: Chain snatching incident from Tamil Nadu goes viral as Jungle Raj in UP

Old video of chain-snatching incident in Coimbatore in Tamil Nadu, goes viral as recent from Uttar Pradesh. Viral claims are misleading.

Lighthouse Journalism came across a video being shared on the social media platforms especially X (formerly Twitter). In a 14 second video a few men in a car are seen snatching the jewellery of a woman walking on the road. The video is being shared with the claim that dacoits in UP are robbing women on the streets. During investigation we found that the video is from an incident in Tamil Nadu that happened last year.

Claim:

X user Paro nidhi Roy shared the video on her profile.

Investigation:

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.

We found the video uploaded on the website of NDTV.

The video was titled: Chain Snatchers Target Woman, She Narrowly Escapes Being Run Over

The report uploaded on May 17, 2023 mentioned that the woman narrowly escaped being run over by a car during a chain-snatching incident in Tamil Nadu’s Coimbatore. The entire incident was caught on CCTV cameras.

We also found the video on other news websites.

The video report was uploaded a year ago on the official YouTube channel of Raj News Tamil.

The video was also uploaded on the X handle of Times Now.
