Fact check: Video from Karachi floods goes viral as from India
Lighthouse Journalism found a video of floods being widely shared in India. Some users shared the video, claiming it to be from recent Mumbai rains, and some shared it with a claim of being from Jammu.
During the investigation, we found that the video was from Karachi in Pakistan, and not India.
Claim:
YouTube channel ‘hub music world 8120’ shared the video, stating that it is from Mumbai.
Other users are also sharing the video with claims that it is from India.
Investigation:
We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.
We found the video on Instagram, shared on August 19, it was said to be from Karachi.
We found one more video posted on August 20 on Instagram.
We found a few more similar visuals of the flood on other YouTube channels.
We also found the video on the X handle, Pakistan Matters.
The video was also shared on TikTok.
The caption of the video said: The severe flood situation that occurred today at the Shahrah-e-Faisal Nursery in Karachi
Conclusion: The viral video does not depict floods in India as claimed. It is in fact, from Karachi, Pakistan. The viral claim is misleading.
