Fact check: Tribals in Tripura did not attack Bangladeshi immigrants, video is not from India

Old video of riots between two groups in Central Papua in Indonesia is now viral as that from Tripura in India. The viral claim is misleading.

Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely shared on social media platforms, it was being claimed along with the video that it showed tribals in Tripura attacking the illegal Bangladeshi immigrants.

During the investigation, we found that the video was not from India but from Central Papua, Indonesia. The viral claim is misleading.

Claim:

X user Mr Roy shared the video with a misleading claim.

Other users are also sharing the same video with similar claims.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframe obtained from the video.

We found this video uploaded on Instagram on December 9, 2024.

The caption said: Attacking each other for 4 hours, Clash of Paslon Supporters in Intan Jaya burns 4 kiosks. Mass dispute of the supporters of the prospective couple (paslon) in Pilkada Intan Jaya District, Central Papua Province clashes. We also found the news report about the incident.

The report said: Intan Jaya Police Chief, Commissioner Subekti Wibowo, said the clash involved more than 1,000 people and each armed themselves with war tools, stones and other sharp tools.

We found one more news report that carried the same visual as shown in the viral video.

Conclusion: Old video of riots between two groups in Central Papua in Indonesia is now viral as that from Tripura in India. The viral claim is misleading.
