Investigation:
We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.
This led us to a news report m.priyo.com, a Bangladeshi media website.
Upon translating the news report using Google translate we found out that the news report was published on July 17. It said: The incident shows Chhatra League workers being tied at Begum Badrunnessa Government Women’s College in the capital city. Arrests were made in this case and victims later left the campus under the supervision of teachers. The incident took place in the residential dormitory of the college on Wednesday, July 17 at 2 pm.
We also found the news report on jagonews24, another media outlet from Bangladesh.
We then connected with a senior fact checker from Bangladesh, Tanvir Mahatab Abir, who informed us that this is a video of the incident of tying some workers of Awami League’s fraternal organization Bangladesh Chhatra League in Begum Badrunnessa Government Women’s College located in Bakshibazar, Dhaka during the quota movement. It is not a communal issue.
Conclusion: Old video where students were tied to a pillar being shared with misleading claims of Muslim women beating Hindu women in Bangladesh. Viral claims are misleading.
