Fact check: Edited image of BJP’s Vanathi Srinivasan goes viral

Old, edited picture of BJP leader Vanathi Srinivasan goes viral as leader standing with ‘Go back Modi’ placard. Viral claim is false.

Lighthouse Journalism found a picture of Vanathi Srinivasan, national president of BJP Mahila Morcha and BJP MLA being widely shared on X (formerly Twitter). The image showed her at the Adi Yogi statue, Coimbatore with a ‘Go back Modi’ written on a placard. During the investigation we found that the picture was edited.

Claim:

X user Urban Shrink shared the image on his profile.

Amidst elections the image was shared by several profiles in the past few months, with another text on the placard, ‘Tamilnadu_Rejects_bjp’.

Investigation:

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on the image.

We found the image posted on the official X handle of Vanathi Srinivasan. The image was posted on October 24, 2021.

The text written on the placard was, ‘India creates history of 100 crore vaccinations. Thank you Modi ji’.

In October 2021, India achieved the 100 crore milestone in its Covid-19 inoculation drive. “This day of October 21, 2021, has been recorded in history. India has crossed the 100 crore vaccine doses mark sometime back,” PM Modi had said then.

We also found the video of this event organised in the Adi Yogi statue premises. The video was uploaded by the YouTube channel of BJP DINDIGUL DISTRICT.
