Fact check: Old video from Hyderabad goes viral, claiming it was from Mumbai’s Mira Road

Lighthouse Journalism came across a video being widely shared on social media platforms after the recent communal incidents on Mira Road, Mumbai. The video claimed to showcase police action in Mumbai’s Mira Road. The communal incidents flared up after a procession of vehicles, with saffron flags, passed through the area.

Upon investigation, it was found that the viral video is from Hyderabad and not from Mumbai.

Claim:

Investigation:

We started the investigation by uploading the video on the InVid tool. Through the detailed view option in the InVid tool to obtain keyframes, we obtained numerous keyframes. We then ran a Google reverse image search on all the keyframes one by one.

Through one of the posts, we found the video on Facebook uploaded by Bh news on 26th August, 2022. The caption mentioned that the video was from Hyderabad.

We also found the video posted by Yunus Lasania on Twitter.

Along with the video a link to the article was added.

The news report on siasat.com mentioned that the incident was from Hyderabad of police action after protests intensified against Raja Singh.

We then connected with Rahul Devulapalli, a journalist from Hyderabad who confirmed that the video was old and from Hyderabad and not Mumbai. He also shared an article about the incident.

Conclusion: Viral video of police action is not from Mira Road, Mumbai but is an old video from 2022 of police action in Hyderabad when police arrested youth from homes after the protests demanding Raja Singh’s arrest intensified.
