Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely shared over social media platforms. The video was shared with a misleading claim that BJP workers hoisted the party flag instead of the Indian Tricolour during Independence Day celebrations.

However, during the investigation, Lighthouse Journalism found that the video is not from August 15 and predates the event being claimed.

Verifying its date and context is important because widespread circulation can amplify a false narrative and wrongly associate an unrelated incident with a national event.

Claim:

Facebook page R.J.D – Rashtriya Janata Dal shared the viral video on their Facebook page with misleading claim.

Other users are also sharing the same video with similar claims.

Investigation:

We started the investigation by downloading the video and extracting keyframes.

During the reverse image search we found this video being a part of a post on X. The post was made by Minister and MLA of West Bengal Arjun Singh on July 6.

The caption read: On the occasion of the 125th Birth Anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mukherjee, I attended a quiz competition organized by Barrackpore Police Station under the @bkpcitypolice  at Pramod Bhawan, with the participation of students from various schools.

The viral video was a part of this post. Arjun Singh also clarified about the same on his verified X profile.

He wrote: This video is not from the Independence Day programme. The video is from the inauguration of my office in Barrackpore, which took place on 6th July, 2026 on the birth anniversary of Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee Ji.

The parties and some individuals spreading such fake narrative and propaganda should have verified the facts before circulating it and should have corrected their mistake. It is such disgraceful action, highly condemnable.

Conclusion: The BJP workers did not hoist the party flag instead of the Indian Tricolour during Independence Day celebrations. The viral video is old and is being shared with misleading claims.
