Lighthouse Journalism found a video being widely shared on social media platforms of a car skidding on a snow-covered road. It was claimed along with the video that it was from a popular tourist destination Manali in India.
During the investigation we found that the video is not recent and not from Manali but old and from Turkey.
Claim:
X user Kuchela shared the viral video on their social media profile.
Other users too are sharing the video widely.
Investigation:
We started the investigation into the post by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the same.
One screenshot led us to a news report on a.com.tr.
The report was titled (translation): The moment a car skidded due to ice and crashed into another vehicle in Malatya was recorded by a cell phone camera.
The report said, “A car skidding due to ice formation after heavy snowfall in Yeşilyurt district of Malatya province and colliding with another car was recorded by a cell phone camera.”
We found that the video was uploaded on 30 December on ‘Mynet’ (Türkiye’s leading internet platform!).
The caption said (translation): A mobile phone camera captured the moment a car skidded due to icy conditions in Malatya and crashed into another vehicle.
We found another news report on haber49.net about the incident.
To check the recent condition of roads due to snowfall, Lighthouse Journalism did a Google keyword search. We found credible news reports that stated thousands of tourists were stranded in Manali due to icy roads and an unprecedented traffic surge.
Conclusion: An old video from December from Turkey of a car skidding on a snow-clad road is being shared as recent from Manali in India. The viral claim is misleading.
