Fact check: Video from Thailand of a dog attack shared as that of India with a misleading claim

The viral video that shows a child being attacked by a dog is not from New Delhi’s Rohini area but from Pattaya, Thailand, in 2022. The viral claim is misleading.

Lighthouse Journalism came across a video being widely shared on social media platforms. The video shows a dog attacking children on the street. It is being claimed that the video is from New Delhi’s Rohini area.

During the investigation, we found that the video is not from India but from Thailand. The viral claim is misleading.

Claim:

X user Dilip Kumar Singh shared the viral video with a misleading claim.

Other users are also sharing the same video with the same claim.

Investigation:

We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video after uploading it to the InVid tool.

We found the video uploaded on the YouTube channel AMARINTV three years ago.

The description said (translation from Thai): Pitbull drags foreign child by the neck, nanny leaves dog staring, owner unlucky to open the trash can

We then ran a Google keyword search in the Thai language.

This led us to a Facebook post on 22nd June 2022.

The caption said: Pit bull dragged a foreign child’s neck. The nanny released him to stand and stare at the dog. Pushing the owner to open the door and throw away the trash. (Clip).

The caption also mentioned that the incident happened in Pattaya.

We found a news report on amarintv.com.

Conclusion: The viral video that shows a child being attacked by a dog is not from New Delhi’s Rohini area but from Pattaya, Thailand, in 2022. The viral claim is misleading.
