Investigation:
We started our investigation by running a reverse image search on the keyframes obtained from the video.
We found the video posted on prothomalo.com from Bangladesh. The translation of the title said: Harassment of freedom fighter in Barguna: What BNP leader’s son said on live
We found another news report in barishaltimes, the report too had the keyframes from the viral video.
The report was titled: Ex-Commander of Barguna District Freedom Fighters Sangsad beaten up, video goes viral
It said: Reporter, former commander of Barisal Barguna district Muktijoddha Sangsad and former member of district Awami League, Abdur Rashid Mia has been accused of public beating. A video of this incident has spread on social media. The incident took place in front of the Barguna District Commissioner’s office on Sunday morning. In the viral video of three minutes and 42 seconds, Barguna district freedom fighter commander Abdur Rashid Mia can be seen being slapped by Shaun Molla, son of Barguna district BNP former president Farooq Molla.
We also found the report on bdcrime24.com.
The report said: In this regard, Humayun Hasan Shaheen, former organizational secretary of Barguna District BNP, said, ‘Shaon Molla was not a member of any committee of BNP. As his father was the convenor of the former committee, the party disbanded that committee. He also has no position in the team.
Barguna is a district in the division Barisal, in southern Bangladesh.
Senior fact checker from Bangladesh, Tanvir Mahatab Abir too confirmed that the video is from an incident that happened in Bangladesh.
Conclusion: Viral video of a man being beaten claimed to be from India is actually from Bangladesh, viral claim is misleading.
