Lighthouse Journalism is an initiative of Indian Express Online (which runs www.indianexpress.com , www.financialexpress.com, www.jansatta.com, www.loksatta.com) and for over 85 years, The Express Group of publications has been synonymous with excellence in journalism with a commitment to independence and fairness.
The Indian Express has won every major national journalism award and several international awards, including the Kurt Schork Award for International Journalism, Natali Prize for Journalism and the International Federation of Journalists - Journalism for Tolerance Prize.
Lighthouse Journalism project arose out of a deep discussion on the need for a platform for the unsung heroes of India, for those who do not find a place in mainstream media coverage, and also for themes and organisations which are so niche that news interest is low.
The project hopes to create communities around these themes, which would go on to crowdfund these themes and we from our end, will build a pool of journalists who write passionately about such issues.
The project also leverages technology and crowd funding to enable the same. Among the largest news organisations in India, we are uniquely positioned to drive this idea of bringing to light stories on people, themes and organisations which lie under the radar, using technology, community building and crowdfunding.
This project is a winner of the Google News Initiative Innovation Challenges award which empowers news innovators from around the world to demonstrate new thinking in online journalism.
